The realization that not every developer should need to understand Kubernetes, Terraform, and a dozen other tools has led organizations to build internal platforms—self-service portals that let developers deploy and operate services without deep infrastructure expertise. Backstage, originally developed at Spotify and now open source, exemplifies this approach.

GitOps extends DevOps principles to infrastructure management. Instead of manually applying infrastructure changes, teams declare desired state in Git and let automated tools reconcile actual state with desired state. This provides the same benefits version control brought to code—audit trails, rollback capability, code review—to infrastructure changes.

AI-assisted DevOps is emerging. Tools that automatically detect anomalies in production, suggest code improvements, or predict deployment failures are starting to appear. Whether AI truly transforms DevOps or becomes another layer of complexity remains to be seen, but the direction of travel is clear: more automation, more intelligence, more autonomous operation.

The fundamental insight that DevOps embodies—that the wall between building software and running software must come down—will continue to reshape how organizations operate. The specific tools and practices will change, but the principle that developers and operators must work together as one team isn’t going anywhere.
