Adapting Your Teaching Strategies To Meet Student Learning Needs

Each Student Is Unique

As educators, we know how swiftly the landscape of education is changing. With the rise in technology, new changes are being introduced in the field of education, day in and day out. Educational institutions are readily adopting new and more effective digital tools and school management software such as eLearning platforms, LMS portals (LMS full form: Learning Management System), smart classes and likewise in order to improve their productivity. Apart from the adoption of new technological teaching tools, a greater focus has also been put on adopting novel teaching strategies which are well-suited for teaching in the modern classroom. There has been a greater emphasis on personalized teaching and for good reason. Educators have grown to recognize that the traditional instruction-based teaching approach where the exact same learning material, assignments and instructions are given to every student, is not the most effective teaching strategy. In order to avoid falling into this trap, educators should try to make some tweaks in their teaching strategy and lessons in order to meet the unique learning needs of individual students. Here are a few tips which will be helpful for the educators in doing the same. So, without further ado, let’s dive in…

Finding Students Learning Styles-

In order to effectively facilitate personalized learning in the classroom, it is important for the educators to find out the unique learning styles of individual students. Some students are visual learners while others may be auditory learners. Some learn best through reading/writing while others might be kinesthetic learners. You can design simple assessment tools by yourself or search for the ones online. These assessments could be in the form of short quizzes. Apart from helping the educators understand the learning needs of the students in a better way, these assessments can also help in creating a greater self-awareness in students by letting them understand about their own learning styles. It also helps them develop a greater sense of ownership over their learning. This can also encourage the students to speak their mind and request changes in teaching strategy by themselves in future for meeting their learning needs.

Differentiated Instructions Based on Individual Learning Styles-

While developing lesson plans and study materials, educators should keep in mind the learning style(s) which their lesson plan and learning material will cater to. Moreover, educators should try to include various types of learning styles of students in their class while making lesson plans. When taking a class, educators can easily differentiate their instructions based on different learning styles of students either by giving different assignments or project work to students with different learning styles, or by including multiple learning activities and assignments to level the playing field by targeting different learning styles all at the same time.

Helping Students With Different Learning Styles Simultaneously-

Addressing multiple learning styles at the same time can be a great way of personalizing your lessons while ensuring that the productivity of your class doesn’t take a hit. In order to address students with different learning styles simultaneously, you should try to use multimedia while creating your lessons. Educators can use various technological tools for creating lessons which support a diverse set of learning styles. You could use charts, pictures and animations for helping the visual learners, use videos and audio files in your lessons for catering to auditory learners, textual material and written assignments for catering to students who learn best by reading/writing. Educators might need to put in some extra efforts and use their creativity for achieving this but it is worth all the effort.

Creating Useful Lesson Plans-

Due attention should be paid while creating lesson plans to adapt your teaching strategies for meeting the individual learning needs of students. Educators should keep in mind that their class comprises a number of students with different learning styles and it is equally important to reach out to each and every one of them. Lesson plans should be created in such a way so as to maximize the understanding and learning outcomes of every type of learner.

Adapting your teaching strategies to meet the individual learning needs of each student is the best approach to teaching. We hope that the tips given in this article will help the educators in creating effective lessons and helping every student in achieving their potential.
